Art by Wendy Bellermann

Working out of her studio at Manufacturers Village in East Orange, New Jersey, Wendy Bellermann is a painter whose work spans three primary areas: high contrast black and white acrylic portraits of blues and rock musicians, colorful acrylics of farm animals and, most recently, paintings made from hand-collected and prepared ochres.

Please contact Wendy Bellermann directly for reproductions of B&W and animal art. Stone pigments are only available as originals.

Meet the Artist

Wendy Bellermann has been investigating the rhythm and patterns of the Blues through high contrast acrylic paintings of artists from Son House to Big Bill Broonzy to Billie Holliday. When shading is concentrated into black or white only, the shapes create emotion and reveal the strength and inner expression of the musician. Her work borrows stylistically from bold, contemporary graphic design, while bringing musicians from the past forward into the present. Her investigation of the high contrast style began with an interest in Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro, which she then pushed further and further as she discovered how minimalist a painting can be while still maintaining form and character. As she works, Bellermann fills her studio with the sound of the Blues, thus grounding her painting in both her own pleasure and aesthetics, and an intellectual engagement with music.
